On hot, steamy summer days, other than keeping yourself hydrated, it’s also important to have protection from the sun. Here are few tips to choose the best for your skin to protect it against harmful UV rays.
1. Sunscreen effectiveness against UVA and UVB light
There are two types of UV rays: UVA and UVB. UVA penetrates the skin more deeply and causes damage in the dermis. To protect yourself against UVA, don’t forget to use sunscreen with a PA+ label. The more + signs in the PA rating, the better its protective ability.
2. Choose products above SPF 30
According to product inspection survey results, more than 40% of sunscreen products are unable to achieve the sunscreen effectiveness as advertised. We recommend you to choose products with SPF value above 40 or 50 just to be on the safe side. This way you can be guaranteed the SPF effectiveness of at least 30.
3. Physical sunscreen lotion
Physical sunscreens are milder and less likely to cause irritation. They are better for those with oily and sensitive skin. They contain mineral ingredients, which work by sitting on top of the skin to deflect and scatter damaging UV rays before they penetrate the skin.
4. Chemical sunscreen lotion
Chemical sunscreens contain active ingredients designed to absorb UV radiation upon contact with the epidermis. They contain compounds that catalyse a neutralising effect, offsetting the damage of UV radiation so that it becomes harmless and is released from the skin. Their sunscreen effectiveness is more complete. They feel drier and less oily but are more likely to cause irritation.
5. Sunscreen powder
Sun protection is more important than looking pretty! That said, all it takes is applying a thin layer of sunscreen before heading out. Use an SPF foundation, pressed powder or sunscreen powder with natural minerals as a way to reapply sunscreen. This way you can keep looking fresh and pretty throughout the day!
Don’t slack off on your sun protection. Without protection, sunshine may not only age your skin prematurely, but also really endanger your health!
